La sombra de una duda

A casa de sus familiares en el tranquilo pueblo de Santa Rosa llega un día el “encantador” tío Charlie (Joseph Cotten), un seductor criminal que viaja de Filadelfia a California y al que la justicia va pisando los talones. Sin embargo, su sobrina, “la pequeña Charlie”, que se llama como él y no sabe nada de sus actividades, no tardará en sospechar que su tío es el misterioso asesino de las viudas...


Una joven (Teresa Wright) se pone muy contenta cuando se entera de que su tío Charlie va a visitar a su familia. Se trata de un hombre fascinante que incluso le regala un reloj. Paralelamente, un sofisticado asesino se dedica a asesinar viudas millonarias y acapara las páginas de la prensa. La joven comienza a sospechar que su tío pudiera ser el asesino.


Uno de los mejores filmes del maestro del suspense -y también su preferida entre toda su filmografía, según dice él mismo en el libro "El cine según Hitchcock", de François Truffaut-, que consigue una enorme tensión, debido al juego entre los dos protagonistas. El excelente Joseph Cotten (El tercer hombre, Ciudadano Kane) consigue la ambigüedad absoluta; no se sabe si es o no el asesino.

Charlotte 'Charlie' Newton is bored with her quiet life at home with her parents and her younger sister. She wishes something exciting wold happen and knows exactly what they need: a visit from her sophisticated and much traveled uncle Charlie Oakley, her mother's younger brother. Imagine her delight when, out of the blue, they receive a telegram from uncle Charlie announcing that he is coming to visit them for awhile. Charlie Oakley creates quite a stir and charms the ladies club as well as the bank president where his brother-in-law works. Young Charlie begins to notice some odd behavior on his part, such as cutting out a story in the local paper about a man who marries and then murders rich widows. When two strangers appear asking questions about him, she begins to imagine the worse about her dearly beloved uncle Charlie.
