En una estación experimental de la Antártida, un equipo de investigadores descubre a un ente extraño venido del espacio, que ha permanecido enterrado en la nieve durante más de 100.000 años. Al descongelarse el ser... se provoca el caos y el terror al mudar de forma y convertirse en uno de los investigadores.

Original actualización del clásico film de terror El enigma de otro mundo, dirigido por Howard Hawks. John Carpenter aprovechó las modernas técnicas de efectos especiales de los ochenta, por lo que consiguió un filme terrorífico. Está protagonizado por su actor fetiche, Kurt Russell, protagonista de sus películas: 1997: Rescate en Nueva York y Golpe en la pequeña China.

An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realises that an alien life-form with the ability to take over other bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.
